Vince Williams Jr. is officially in his second season of professional basketball and things are starting to click. Williams Jr. has played in each of the Grizzlies last twelve games and has started the last two in replace of the inactive Desmond Bane.
Vince Williams Jr.’s basketball journey started at Ohio powerhouse Toledo St. John’s. A school that has also produced Brian Roberts and John Amaechi. Williams Jr. then attended VCU where he was first team All-Atlantic 10 as a senior. The Grizzlies drafted him in the second round and 47th overall in the 2022 NBA Draft.
In 2022, Williams Jr. only appeared in 15 NBA games while appearing in 7 G-League games. The G-League stint only lasted through December and included a magnificent highlight of him winning the game on a putback dunk. His NBA games featured him playing in just a handful of minutes and he didn’t get a start or meaningful minutes until the season finale.
This season has scene a different turn for Vince Williams Jr. The second year guard is now a regular trusted role player. He has received meaningful minutes since the week of Thanksgiving and has proven his worth to the team. Although he doesn’t blowup a stat sheet, Williams Jr. has been a reliable addition and a lockdown defender. And don’t just take it from me, just ask Luka Donic.
The Grizzlies aren’t in a great spot at the moment, but Vince Williams Jr. seems to be a point of pride as he helps represent the toughness of Memphis basketball culture. His career is still young and he is still cutting his teeth, but keep an eye on Vince Williams Jr., he just may be the difference maker a team needs.
