It’s not often punters get a full ride scholarship. But that’s position Tyler Perkins found himself in just a few short years ago. As a senior at Norwalk St. Paul, Perkins was undoubtedly the best punter in Ohio. He had plenty of interest from different programs, but the Iowa State Cylcones were the only ones to offer the coveted full ride scholarship.
The decision to accept has worked out tremendously for both parties. Perkins started as a true freshman last season and was absolutely as good as advertised. Perkins was a secret weapon for Iowa State as he consistently pinned oppnents deep in their own territory.
This season Tyler Perkins has stepped up his game even more. He currently leads to country in punt yards with 1,305. Nearly one hundred yards over second place. He is also one of only five players to have a punt go seventy yards or more. Also, nearly half of his punts land inside the twenty yard line. This has put Tyler Perkins at near the top of every Ray Guy Award watchlist.
Tyler Perkins’ services will be ever more needed as the Cyclones face a grueling schedule the rest of the season. With his talent the Cyclones may even be able to pull off an upset or two so long as their defense can keep the field position.
Should Tyler Perkins make it to the NFL, he would be the first person in his high school’s, city’s and high school conference’s history to make the league.
