An unknown star to most in Northwest Ohio, Waldo native and Marion Pleasant graduate Trevor Harris is leading the underdog Montreal Alouettes into the Canadian Football League Playoffs. In his first full season in Montreal, the two time Grey Cup champion has Montreal looking to unseat the CFL’s top brass.
With an October 14th win over the Ottawa Redblacks, Montreal has clinched a spot in the CFL playoffs and are looking to get past the first round for the first time since 2014. Harris is leading the way after he was traded to Montreal from Ottawa late last season. He was subsequently released but resigned in Febuary. After being positioned as a backup, Harris was subed-in to the Alouettes first game this season after a lathargic opening quarter and he has remained the starter ever since.
The Alouettes have had a whirlwind of a season thus far. Montreal started the season 1-3 and fired head coach Khari Jones. He was then replaced by GM Danny Maciocia who took over both roles. The team then battled throughout the season to remain at .500. Then, in late August, owner Gary Stern said he was stepping away from the organization. The team is now in control by representatives of the Sid Spiegel estate, who passed away in July of 2021. Despite all these setbacks, Montreal has clinched a playoff spot and have two games remaing in the regular season.
Harris is currently 3rd in the league in passing yards and 4th in the league in passing touchdowns. Harris started his career in Toronto in 2012 where he won a Grey Cup as backup to hall of famer Ricky Ray. Then, during the 2015, Ricky Ray suffered a multi-game injury that allowed Harris to become Toronto’s starter where he lead them to a 9-7 record. In 2016, Harris signed in free agency with the Ottawa Redblacks. That season he led the Redblacks to a championship in only their 3rd year in existence. Harris would lead Ottawa back to the playoffs in 2017 and to a 27-16 Grey Cup loss in 2018. Harris would sign with Edmonton where he led them to the conference championship game in 2019 but suffered multiple injuries in 2021 season. In late October 2021, Harris was traded to Montreal where he played the final three games of the season.
Harris is currently the only athlete to graduate from a Marion County high school and play professional football. The only other Northwest Ohio athlete to play for the Montreal Alouettes was Danny Houston of Toledo Rogers in 1969.
