The following is a list of the ten best athletes in Auglaize County history. This list only takes into account post-high school accomplishments.
10. Joe Horn
Joe Horn of Waynesfield-Goshen was a two sport star at Ashland University. He was a 12x All-American in track and field for the Eagles. He has the 2nd fastest 200m in NWO history, 5th fastest 100m and 8th fastest 400m. On the gridiron, Horn has the most receiving yards in Ashland history, has the most career receiving touchdowns and most points in a game.
9. Leslie Moorman
Minster graduate Lesslie Moorman turned an undefeated high school career into a collegiate career at Bowling Green State. She was a four year letter winner for the Falcons and was on their record setting 4x400m. She is also the 2nd fastest 400m hurdler in Northwest Ohio history.
8. Bob Ewing
New Hampshire, Ohio native Bob Ewing was the first ever pro athlete from Auglaize County. He played for the Cincinnati Reds from 1902-1909. He then played two season for the Phillies and one for the Cardinals. Ewing was selected to the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame.
7. Stacey Clausing
St. Marys Memorial grad Stacey Clausing is one of the fastest women in Northwest Ohio history. She ran for Indiana for four years in college and ran another three years semi-profressionally. Competing at the USA Indoor Championships twice. While at Indiana, she won a Big Ten title in the indoor 4x400m relay and the outdoor 200m dash. She has the 3rd fastest 200m in NWO history, 2nd fastest 400m and 1st fastest 600m.
6. Nikki Miars
St. Marys Memorial grad Nikki Miars was a basketball star in the 1990s. She played four years of college ball at South Carolina. averaging 15 points per game in 1996-97 and being named Second Team All-SEC. She scored 1,263 points in her college career while starting 100 of 108 career games. She led the team in assists for three straight years and averaged the most minutes played in program history.
5. Galen Cisco
St. Marys Memorial alumnus Galen Cisco was a two-sport star at Ohio State before playing pro baseball. He was a captain of the 1957 Buckeyes team that won the national title and the Rose Bowl. He was a Third Team All-American in baseball and was also a First Team All-Big Ten selection. He played in the majors from 1961-1969 with three different teams.
4. Evan Eschmeyer
New Knoxville graduate Evan Eschmeyer is one of the few Northwest Ohio athletes to make it to the NBA. Eschmeyer had the Northwestern program records for free throws made in a game, season and career. In his time in college he pulled down a Northwestern record 995 rebounds and scored 1,805 points. He also graduated with the school record in field goal percentage. He led the team in blocked shot, rebounds and field goal percentage for four years and scoring for three. He was named to the First Team All-Big Ten three times, won the Big Ten Medal of Honor in 1999 and was a Second Team All-American. He then played for the New Jersey Nets and Dallas Mavericks.
3. Mike Hammerstein
Wapakoneta grad Mike Hammerstein was a force of defensive lineman for the Michigan Wolverines. He was the Michigan team MVP in 1985, along with being named the Fiesta Bowl MVP, Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year and earning First Team All-Big Ten honors and First Team All-America honors. He then played for the Cincinnati Bengals from 1986-1990.
2. Sunni Olding
Sunni Olding took a 2x high school All-American career to Notre Dame after graduating from Minster. Olding was an All-American cross country runner for the Fighting Irish as a freshman and sophomore before being hampered by injuries. She still qualified for the national meet with her team as an upperclassman. She is the 7th fastest miler in NWO history, while also being the 6th fastest in the 3k and the 5k.
1. Gray Horn
Waynesfield-Goshen graduate Gray Horn was an all-around athlete that could run, jump and throw. Horn was a decathlete at the University of Florida. He won the SEC title in the Heptathlon in 2011 and Decathlon in 2012. He then won the bronze medal at the USA Championships in the Decathlon in 2012 and gold in the Heptathlon in 2014. He also helped the Gators win four national titles in track and field. He still holds the Florida programs records in the Heptathlon and Decathlon. He is the number one heptathlete and decathlete in Northwest Ohio history, as well as having the third best long jump and eighth best 110m hurdle time.
