Division II
The boys team state title may be the most dramatic finish in Ohio history. The talented Huron squad swept both the 4x100m and 4x200m. Their 4x200m narrowly missed the state record. Combine that with Beau Harkelroad’s runner-up performance in the 110m hurdles and Joe Schaeffer’s 5th place in the 200m, the Tigers were in a great place. However, before the 200m, Beau Harkelroad was competing in the 300m hurdles. Beau stormed from 5th place to 2nd in the final 100m. However, defending state champion Brayden Richards blew past the previous state record, and also his last hurdle. Richards hit his final hurdle so hard that it flew into Harkelroad’s lane causing him to crash hard into the track. Harkelroad went from 2nd to 8th in a matter of seconds. As a result, it was determined that Richards would be disqualified for interfering with other runners and the race would be re-run at the end of the meet. Huron was down 36 to 32 to Cleveland Glenville heading into the re-run. Harkelroad, running his 9th race in two days, needed to finish 4th or better to win the team title for the Tigers. Coming down the final stretch, Harkelroad stormed to the front again to finish with the 2nd best overall time by just .004 of a second to deliver the title to Huron.
