After a long fall season, Northwest Ohio has officially brought home 6 state titles. They were won by Minster Girls Country (D3), New Bremen Volleyball (D4), Lima Shawnee Boys Soccer (D2), Toledo Central Catholic Football (D2), Maria Stein Marion Local Football (D6) and New Bremen Football (D7).
The championship season started with Minster blowing out the competition at Fortress Obetz. The Wildcats scored 63 points, almost doubling the total needed to catch them from runners-up Fort Loramie who had 116. Minster’s scoring runners finished in scoring places of 8th, 9th, 11th, 14th and 21st. This is Minster’s 13th girls cross country state title and their 6th since 2016. The state title capped off another incredible year for the Wildcats as they have won their 33rd Midwest Athletic Conference Title and their 10th straight.
Keeping it in the MAC, New Bremen swept fellow NWO school Monroeville 3 sets to 0 in the state title game. The Cardinals were lead by Olivia Heitkamp who had 19 kills and Abi Powers who had 18 digs. This is the Cardinals third state title, which have all come since 2017. The Cardinals had only lost 1 game all season and had only allowed an opponent to win 2 or more sets 3 times all year. The title capped off a season where New Bremen won just their 6th MAC title in school history.
Lima Shawnee won Northwest Ohio its third ever boys soccer state title and did so in thrilling fashion. After being tied 0-0 at the end of regulation, the Indians went into overtime against the Bexley Lions. After two periods of overtime there was still no winner. The game went to penalty kicks where the Indians missed their first attempt but netted the next three and secured the state title. It is perhaps such a thrilling victory that it is surprising this is not heralded enough, especially given the fact NWO soccer is still playing catch up to the suburbs of the big C’s. The title capped off a season where Lima Shawnee only had one tie and one defeat and captured their fourth straight WBL championship.
On a Thursday night in Canton, Toledo Central Catholic defeated Akron Archbishop Hoban in a battle of catholic school stalwarts. The Fighting Irish came out swinging and scored 28 points in the first half. Hoban responded with Mr. Football Lamar Sperling scoring two touchdowns in the third quarter to make the game 28-21. However, the Fighting Irish defense held strong and outlasted Hoban to claim the state title. After losing the opening game to Lakewood St. Edward’s, Toledo Central Catholic never looked back and won 15 straight games and claimed the final TRAC title in the process. This is Toledo Central Catholic’s fourth football state title in school history.
To start yesterday’s slate of championship games two small school powerhouses took the field. Maria Stein Marion Local and Kirtland competed in a battle of the unbeaten. The Flyers stingy defense once again led the way to thwart the Hornets 14 to 6. During the entirety of the playoffs the Flyers only allowed 9 points and have only allowed 39 points the whole year. This is the Flyers second straight state title and 13th in school history.
Circling back around to New Bremen, but this time it was the football team’s turn to hoist the trophy. The Cardinals defeated the Eagles of Warren JFK 38 to 6 to claim the school’s second state title of the school year and the MAC’s fourth of the season. The Cardinals bounced back in the playoffs after 3 losses in conference play to rally for 6 straight games to win their second football state title in school history. Given the win, the Cardinals now have more state championships than they do MAC championships.
Six state championship trophies will now continue to reside in Northwest Ohio. The MAC will add four to their collection, Lima Shawnee won their first ever state title for a boys team and Toledo Central Catholic earned won more title for the TRAC before it disperses. Lets hope we see the same success at the end of the winter season.
