The New Bremen Cardinals took down fellow Northwest Ohio school and volleyball power Tiffin Calvert to win the state championship yesterday. New Bremen came into the game 24-4 while Calvert was 27-1.
New Bremen got out to a strong start. Getting out to a 22-14 lead in the first set. However, Calvert battled back to make it 24-22 until a kill by Toledo commit Olivia Heitkamp gave the set to the Cardinals.
The second set was a closely contested battle as the margin never got bigger than three points. The set ended up tied 25-25 and then again at 26-26 until two straight points by Calvert gave them the set to tie it up 1-1.
The third set again found the Cardinals off and running and holding nearly a seven point lead for most of the set. Yet the Senecas battled back, scoring 6 straight points to make it 23-22. However the Cardinals responded with two points of their own to take the third set and go up 2-1.
The fourth set started off neck-and-neck with the score at 8-7. Then New Bremen rattled off 7 straight point to make it 15-7. Calvert battled back to make it 18-16 but the powerful Cardinals scored seven straight points to win the set and take home the state title.
This is New Bremen’s second straight state title and fourth (‘17, ‘19, ‘22, ‘23) in program history. It is also the 20th volleyball state title for the Midwest Athletic Conference and 5th in Auglaize County history. Every Division 4 state title has been won by a Northwest Ohio school since 2017.
