A first of its kind in Ohio. The Martin RPI ranking algorithm has debuted this week. The Martin RPI is designed to rank high school basketball teams by a standard formula as oppossed to a coaches votes. The Northwest Ohio District will be the only one in Ohio using this system for the playoffs this season.
The idea of the Martin RPI is similar to that of the Harbin Points System for football, eliminate bias and allow schools to know how they are going to be ranked and to schedule accordingly. There are plenty of differences though. For example, the Martin RPI is an algorithm of averages, therefore, teams will be given a rating between 0 and 1. Also, given the amount of games played, simply competing against one good team would not be enough to move you up, you would need a generally tough schedule throughout the year. The other big difference is that the Martin RPI takes into account the winning percentage of your opponents AND your opponents’ opponents. This gives a whole outlook rather than just wins and losses versus specific sized schools like in football.
The formula is as follows:
(Winning Percentage x 35%) + (Opponents’ Winning Percentage x 35%) + (Opponents’ Opponents’ Winning Percentage x 25%) + (School Size Factor x 5%)
As you can see, there is a lot that goes into making these rankings, especially given the amount of games that happen across the state. The rankings are updated continuosly at MartinRPI.com. There you can see the initial Martin RPI rankings across the state for both boys and girls.
