It’s no doubt Northwest Ohio is a hot bed for wrestling. Then it should come as no surprise that lots of those great high school wrestlers you see end up making their way onto the NCAA stage. I thought I would give these wrestlers their due and take a look at some of the local talent who have gone onto the Division 1 level.
Cleveland State seems to be the destination for local talent as they have 6 local athletes on the team. They are lead by Bluffton’s DeAndre Nassar who was an NCAA qualifier in 2020-21 and was fourth last year at the MAC Championships. Teammate Josh Manley of Otsego was seventh last year at the MAC Championships and is Cleveland State’s top wrestler at 133 lbs. Also looking to make a big step for the Vikings this year is Joseph Caprella of Lima Central Catholic, Cody Moosman of Anthony Wayne, Gabe Phillips of Norwalk and Carson Smith of Marion Pleasant.
Brothers Cole and Zack Mattin out of Delta are teammates again at the University of Michigan. Cole, a redshirt junior, is looking to make a huge leap forward this year. Last season Cole went 3-2 in dual meets but missed significant time with injury. This year he has already gotten the year started off with a win at 141 lbs. at the Michigan State Open. Meanwhile, brother Zack is also looking to bounce back from a season ending injury after starting off last season with a 4-1 record.
At THE Ohio State University there are two wrestlers looking to make an impact for the Buckeyes. Genoa native and 4x state champion Dylan D’Emilio looks to build off of last years success. In 2021-22 D’Emilio was an NCAA Qualifier and finished 5th at the Big Ten Championships. D’Emilio went down with an injury at the Michigan State Opener but will hopefully return to the mat. True freshman Carter Chase of Marion Pleasant also went down with a medical forfeit at the Michigan State Opener. Chase looks to carry his success from high school where he was state champ at 164 lbs.
There are also plenty of freshman to look out for as well. Brody Conley has taken his talent to West Virginia after winning two state titles for Tiffin Columbian. Austin Kohlhofer of Delta has made his way to West Point where he will wrestle for Army.
Elsewhere in division one, Oscar Sanchez of Genoa is wrestling for Ohio. Sanchez went 17-12 last season with a 6th place finish at the MAC Championships. Not to be outdone, his twin Julian Sanchez currently wrestles at West Point and had a record of 12-7 last season. Oak Harbor’s Wyatt Miller is now at Appalachian State where as a true freshman he was thrust into the lineup and finished with a 12-14 record and took the Southern Conference champion into overtime. In the Ivy League, Cornel’s Justin Mayes of Bellevue looks to build off of last season at make an impact at 174 lbs. for the Big Red while Brown’s Blake Saito of Perrysburg looks to contribute for the Bears. Hadyn Danals of Caledonia River Valley will be officially competing for Virginia this year after he competed unnatched last season.
If you would like to watch any of these wrestlers your best option would be ESPN+ or FloWrestling as both streaming coverage of NCAA wrestling.
