Northwest Ohio continually produces top level wrestling talent. Following an athlete’s high school years, many of these wrestlers go on to the collegiate level. The following is a breakdown of local wrestlers competing at the Division 1 level this season.
The number one local product is Dylan D’Emilio at Ohio State. The Genoa product was a four time state champion in high school. Last season for the Buckeyes he was fourth at the Big Ten Championships and finished 8th at NCAAs to earn All-American status. So far this season, D’Emilio is 8-1 with the only loss coming to the No. 4 wrestler in the country in the opening match of the season. D’Emilio is currently ranked 7th in the country. Also at Ohio State is Carter Chase of Marion Pleasant. Chase was a state champion in 2022 and so far in his sophomore season he is 8-3.
Also in the Big Ten, true freshman Joey Blaze has made a name for himself. The Perrysburg product and three-time state champion defeated two ranked opponents for the Purdue Boilermakers. Blaze’s prowess has him now ranked in the top 20. Another freshmen, Max Hermes, has taken his talents from Edison to Rutgers. Hermes is 5-3 so far this season and is coming off three straight state titles in high school. Zack Mattin is competing for the Michigan Wolverines. Mattin missed much of last season with an injury but this season is 4-1 in tournament competition. Also, Findlay grad and freshman Hudson Goebel will be wretling for Illinois.
Other major competitors at the college level are Brody Conley and Hadyn Danals. Conley was a two time state champion from Tiffin Columbian and is now a sophomore at West Virginia. Conley was the Mountaineers Rookie of the Year last season. This year he is currently ranked 28th in the nation and has a 4-1 record. Danals, a Caledonia River Valley graduate, went 14-5 last season for Virginia and looks to expand on that success this year.
Wrestling for Army this season is Delta’s Austin Kohlhofer. Last season as a freshmen Kohlhofer went 10-8, this season Kohlhofer is at a 5-4 on the year. Also competing at West Point is Genoa’s Julian Sanchez. Also at service academies are brothers Chase and Gavin Cparella of Lima Central Catholic. Chase is a senior at Navy and Gavin is a freshman at Air Force.
Over at Bucknell, Perrysburg product and state champion Myles Takats is 10-5 so far this season for the Bison. Fellow Yellow Jacket Wynton Denkins is 4-2 as a freshman for the Campbell Camels. Also competing for Campbell is Gunner Endicott of Eastwood who is 5-1 on the year and Mike Kinzel of Bowling Green.
The Cleveland State Vikings are loaded with local talent this season. Former state champion DeAndre Nassar of Bluffton is a redshirt junior who has placed in the conference twice and competed at the NCAA championships. Otsego’s Jake Manley is coming off a fourth place finish in the conference a year ago. He is already 2-1 this season. Also, true freshman AJ Parish of Perrysburg is already 5-1 on the year. The team also features Ethan Mitchell of Findlay, Gabe Phillips of Norwalk and Carson Smith of Marion Pleasant.
Over in the Ivy League, Justin Mayes of Bellevue is wrestling for Cornell and has a 3-1 record so far this year. At Brown, Perrysburg’s Blake Saito is 6-3 on the year.
