With the 2024 baseball season underway, lets take a look at all the Northwest Ohio athletes playing in majors and minors this season.
There are two local athletes in the big leagues this year. Just across the stateline you can see Western Reserve grad Andrew Chafin suit up for the Detroit Tigers. Chafin is in his second stint with Detroit, also taking the mound for them in 2022. Chafin has been in the majors since 2014 and has been a part of five organizations. Head across the international border and you can see Chris Bassitt take the mound for the Toronto Blue Jays. Bassitt is in his second season with the Blue Jays where last year he led the American League in wins, games started and batters faced. Bassitt also finished 10th in the Cy Young voting.
In Triple-A you don’t have to go any farther than Northwest Ohio’s own Toledo Mud Hens to see Edison graduate Adam Wolf take the mound. Wolf spent last season in Double-A Erie before being called up to start the season. Also in Triple-A is Napoleon’s Art Warren. Warren is on a minor league deal with the New York Yankees after pitching in the MLB in 2022 before having to sit out last season to recover from UCL surgery.
Toledo Central Catholic’s Jase Bowen is back with the Altoona Curve in Double-A. Bowen is one of the Pirate’s top ranked prospects and is expected to continue to climb through the farm system with his hitting and fielding prowess. Also in Double-A is Findlay’s Connor Curlis. Curlis played in just 6 games last year before having to sit out the remainder of the season due to injury. He will be back on the mound with the Chattanooga Lookouts for the fourth year.
Archbold has two players in the minors this season. The first is Jeron Williams in High-A Asheville. Williams played as an infielder for the University of Toledo before being picked up by the Astros after the collegiate season. Williams played in the Rookie and Single-A league last season before being assigned to High-A this year. The other Blue Streak in the minors is outfielder Kade Kern. Kade Kern wrapped up his Ohio State career last year and was signed by Atlanta to their Rookie league affiliate. This season Kern will be with the Single-A Augusta GreenJackets.
Also playing in the minors this year is Celina’s Seth Lonsway. Lonsway will be in his second season as a pitcher with the High-A Eugene Emeralds of the San Francisco Giants organization. Lakota’s Tyler Wehrle will be making his High-A debut with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Wehrle spent last season pitching for the Single-A Carolina Mudcats.
