Lima Central Catholic is making their return to the Northwest Conference.
After the announcement earlier this year that Ada and Leipsic were departing, the NWC was in a spot where they needed to act. The conference was down to seven schools, six of which play football. Delphos St. John’s was rumored to be the next in line but it never came to fruition. Speculation leaned heavily towards Liberty-Benton, but the enrollment was just too much to ignore.
Lima Central Catholic seemed like an obvious answer to fill the void but their previous stint in the conference left doubt. The Thunderbirds steamrolled most of their competition during their previous tenure from 2006-2013. Their dominance forced an exit from the conference where they ended up becoming an independent. The Thunderbirds have been independent ever since.
The past few years have seen Lima Central Catholic’s enrollment decline and competitiveness reach a level similar to the rest of the Northwest Conference. LCC was the best fit geographically and enrollment-wise for the Northwest Conference moving forward. This will bring them to eight total schools and seven football schools. It is expected that Fort Loramie will join as a football only member to give the conference eight members for every sport.
The move will go into effect in the 2024-25 school year. By that point Ada and Leipsic will have departed for the Blanchard Valley Conference.
Lima Central Catholic was formed in the 1959-60 school year after the consolidation of St. Gerard, St. John’s and St. Rose. They have been and independent their entire history except for stints in the Lake Plains Conference (1964-69), Miami Valley League (1969-75) and Northwest Conference (2006-13; 2023-).
