True freshman Joey Blaze is one of the most feared on the mat in the NCAA. The Perrysburg native traded in his black and gold yellow jacket singlet for a black and gold Boilermaker singlet in his first year of college. Blaze is currently ranked #14 in the 157 lbs. weight class.
Blaze was a three time state champion in high school and was the top ranked wrestling recruit coming out of Ohio last season. Blaze is currently 15-7 this season and has not been pinned all year. Blaze made a name for himself after he defeated one of the top ranked wrestlers in the country, Ed Scott of North Carolnia State.
Blaze is currently the 4th best wrestler in his weight class in the Big Ten. Placing high enough in the conference will gurantee him a national championship spot.
Blaze is one of the highest ranked local wrestlers at the NCAA level. The other being Dylan D’Emilio (Genoa) at the 149 lbs. weight class for Ohio State. No Perrysburg wrestler has ever earned All-American honors at the NCAA Division I level. Should Blaze finish in the top 8 at the national championships, he will become the first.
