Northwood native and Toledo Central Catholic grad Jase Bowen is showing out this season for the Greensboro Grasshoppers. The High-A South Atlantic League Pirates affiliate is currently second in the standings and that is no small part due to Bowen’s prowess.
Bowen is currently in his 4th season of minor league baseball, his first full time at High-A. Bowen started out in the rookie league before playing a year and a half with the Low-A Bradenton Marauders. Last year, midway through the season, Bowen was called up to the Greensboro Grasshoppers in High-A. After a trip down under to Sydney, Australia in the winter leagues, Bowen seems to have found his stride and improved his production immensely.
This season, through 57 games, Jase Bowen is at the top of the league in both home runs and RBIs. His 15 home runs is three more than the second best hitter in the league. He actually has more home runs than he has doubles. His 55 RBIs is incredibly impressive given the fact he has only played 57 games. He is the only player in the league with over 50 RBIs.
How much has Bowen improved? In 125 games last year, Bowen had just 17 home runs and 74 RBIs. He has almost reached those totals already in less than half the amount of games.
It seems like it is just a matter of time before Bowen gets called up to Double-A. The Altoona Curve would be his next step and they are need of more batting power from their outfielders. Bowen is currently at the ability level where he could be their number three outfielder at worst. At best, he could be the number one guy in the outfield. He would also be one of the youngest on Altoona’s roster.
Time will tell, but keep your eye on Jase Bowen and his monster home run highlights. He may end up in the majors before you know it.
