With just over two months to go in the collegiate season, Charlie Clark is returning to the pool after competing in the World Short Course Championships.
The Ohio State Buckeye is only a junior, but he is no stranger to the international scene. Last year as a sophomore he competed in the 800 and 1500 freestyle for team USA at the World Championships. This year, at the World Short Course Championships (a 25 meter pool instead of 50), Clark finished 7th in the 1500 freestyle and 8th in the 800 freestyle. In addition to the World Short Course Championships, Clark also competed in a FINA World Cup event in November where he finished 3rd in the 1500.
This international success has helped propel Clark to success at the NCAA level. Clark opened the year with wins in the 500 yard and 1000 yard against Virginia Tech. Then, in the middle of November, Clark finished 1st in the 1000y, 1st in 1650y and 4th in the 500y at the Ohio State Fall Invitational. Now, just this weekend, Clark returned from the international winter break with a first place in 1000y and 2nd in the 500y in a tri-meet against Texas and Alabama. And that 2nd place in the 500y came to team USA teammate David Johnson who Clark competed against at the World Championships.
Charlie Clark is one of the best swimmers to come from Northwest Ohio in a long time. With his dominance and prowess it is only a matter of time before he becomes a household name in swimming. With only two months left, watch out for Clark at the Big Ten Championship as he tries to defend his 1650 title and at the National Championships where he looks to bring home his first piece of hardware.
