With the MLB Playoffs just on the horizon, Genoa grad and Curtice native Chris Bassitt is helping lead the New York Mets down the home stretch. In his first year as a Met Bassitt has proved himself as a standout third rotation pitcher behind Jacob DeGrom and Max Scherzer. Currently the Mets are holding a slight lead over the Atlanta Braves in the NL East but have already secured a playoff spot. On the season Bassitt has a 15-8 record with an ERA of 3.27.
The last local high school graduate to win a World Series was Oakwood’s Doug Bair in 1984 with the Detroit Tigers. Bassitt is the only Genoa graduate to make the major leagues and is only the 3rd Ottawa County player. The other two being Jeff Little (Woodmore) from 1980-1982 and Harry McCluskey from Clay Center in 1915. A World Series ring would make Bassitt the only Ottawa County native to win a major pro sports championship ever. The only major pro sport or college championship won was Oak Harbor’s and Elliston’s Emil Slovak who won a football national title with Notre Dame in 1946.
Bassitt has been in the MLB since 2014. After a year with the Chicago White Sox Bassitt was traded to the Oakland A’s where he played from 2015 to 2021, although he missed the 2017 season with an injury. In his last year as an A Bassitt was named to his first All-Star team. He was then subsequently traded this past March to the Mets where he has helped them close in on 100 wins. This year will be only the second playoff appearance for Bassitt after the the 2020 A’s were were bounced in the ALDS.
