If Grizzlies’ fans didn’t know who Vince Williams Jr. was then they do now. Williams has been a force on Memphis’ Summer League team and he doesn’t show signs of stopping.
Although many Grizzlies and NBA fans have their eyes on teammate Kenneth Lofton Jr., Williams has earned his stripes in his own right. The second year pro was drafted in the second round last year and spent the season with the G-League Memphis Hustle while also appearing in 15 NBA games. Williams Jr. came out of Toledo St. John’s HS before a stellar career at VCU. Now Williams Jr. is looking to become a mainstay in the association.
In the Salt Lake City Summer League on July 3rd Williams popped off 19 points, 15 of which came from 3 pointers. Williams followed that performance up with an 18 point 9 rebound outing against the Thunder.
Now in the traditional Las Vegas Summer League, Williams Jr. already has a game under his belt. The sharpshooting guard had 7 points and 5 rebounds in just 15 minutes of play.
Last season in the G-League, Williams averaged 16.7 points and 6.9 rebounds a game. He also played a full 48 minutes in the Grizzlies last game of the season where he had 15 points and 8 rebounds.
Playing time is going to be much harder to come by now with the additions of veterans Marcus Smart and Derrick Rose. At the moment it is unclear whether Williams Jr. will be a NBA role player for Memphis, G-Leaguer or a valued player to add onto a trade. Nevertheless, if Vince Williams Jr. continues to have a tremendous Summer League then there will be a roster spot for him somehwere.
