Huron graduate Cody Thompson is signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after four years with the Seattle Seahawks.
Thompson was signed by the Buccaneers on June 5th. He is currently one of 12 receivers on the Buccaneers 90-man roster. It is unclear whether Thompson will be used primarily as a wide receiver or as a special teams player. Of the 12 wide receivers currently on the roster, four are rookies.
Thompson entered the league in 2019 after a standout career at the University of Toledo. He initially was with the Kansas City Chiefs before signing with Seattle’s practice squad then again changing teams to sign with Cincinnati’s practice squad.
The Seahawks then resigned Thompson in 2020 and he has been there ever since. Thompson started to show promise in 2021 where he appeared in five games, primarily on special teams. Heading into the 2022 season, Thompson looked to be a contender for one of the Seahawk’s main receiving options before a shoulder injury forced him out the entire year. This past season Thompson played 23 offensive snaps and 93 special teams snaps for Seattle.
Thompson has the potential to be a solid contributor at wide receiver for any team in the NFL. Time will tell if that potential comes to fruition with the Buccaneers.
Cody Thompson is the second Huron graduate to play in the NFL, the other being Bill Slyker in 1922. If Thompson appears in a regular season game for the Buccaneers, he will be the sixth Northwest Ohio athlete to play for them. The others being defensive end TJ Fatinikun (Perrysburg 2014-15), wide receiver Eric Page (Hol. Springfield 2013), kicker Todd France (Hol. Springfield 2005), running back William Howard (Lima Senior 1988-89) and offensive tackle Mike Current (Lima Senior 1976).
